Meet our Tug Hero captain, David Richardson. David, a 7th generation Miami native, began his career in the marine industry as a teenager doing day work at Merrill-Stevens where his father, Walter Richardson, worked as the Superintendent. After high school, David got a job working with Epic Marina as a deckhand and then moved to Key West where he worked as the head deck hand, leading a team of 15 before he became the captain of a charter boat.
In 2016 David relocated to Fort Lauderdale to lead the Bradford Marine tug team. “I love being a part of the marine industry; it’s the people, it’s a relationship based industry and everyone is looking to meet new people and to help each other out” said David. When he isn’t working on boats David is fishing from one. He is an avid fisherman and also enjoys camping and exploring in the Everglades.
Hero is a 32′ Custom Tug built by a Seabee of the U.S. Naval Construction Forces in 1973. Hero was originally piloted by Royden “Red” Koch, tug pioneer and “King of the River”. “I’m excited to be carrying on the legacy of such a famous boat,” added Capt. David. He has navigated the tight turns and ripping currents of Fort Lauderdale’s New River with yachts up to 180′.
